Congrats, very cool. Also, given the header of that Lancet profile, I think you should start referring to yourself as a “multidimensional psychiatrist”.

Dear Ronald (from another aging Ronald): I don't mean to be interrupting this conversation, nor intruding. However, I have not had much access to my colleagues from my early career years. When I observed your comments here and at other posts, I felt lucky to be able to at least say "hi" and to thank you for starting the independent publication "The Psychiatric Times" in 1985 and then keeping it strong for so many years! Congratulations on its 40th year!! Thank you and kudos to you, Dr. Pies! I could write so much more, but only if I am invited to. I do not want to be intrusive.

The Psychiatric Times and Howard Fishman and others, during its early years of 1988 to about 1991, did honorable and, I think, courageous reporting and advocacy for a large number of mental health professionals in Hawaii (and other places, especially New York) who were being persecuted through false criminal charges related to Medicaid/Medicare services. The Hawaii prosecutions were conducted by a renegade Deputy Attorney General, George Yamamoto, who, because of my advocacy at the Hawaii Legislature, was forced to resign in 1985, due to his habitual prosecutorial misconduct.

I wish I could say "thank you" to Howard Fishman, who, I discovered passed-away in 2006, for his reporting of those events which, among other things, led to a 60 Minutes takedown of Inspector General, Richard Kusserow.

I am not sure if Howard was on board at the Times as early as 1985, but I am hopeful the Times will honor his contributions to the high quality of investigative journalism that he brought to the magazine.

If you want a brief follow-up about my post-refugee-claim life, let me know.

Thank you again, for your ongoing loyalty to a magazine that was and is very important to psychiatry. Take care, and best wishes, Ron

Congratulations, it is not easy to find somebody really thinking about the mind, not repeating what we are all supposed to know.

As a psychiatric patient for 35 years in Toronto, Montreal, New York and LA- I’m deeply entrenched in not only the politics (and the laws) but the advancements, rhythms, rhetoric, promises, theories, and the evolution of the entire discipline.

I learn as the subject; I live both within, and from the margins. It seems to me you’re getting the recognition and credit you deserve. You’re set apart by your reach- recognizing the value of listening to actual patients. Our voices- lived experience- is vital to consider, and I can tell when it’s missing on a deeply mental, physical, and personal level.

I am grateful for your work. You’re making a difference in the world. A big one.

Congratulations on being recognized as a thinker and, even better, as someone who is fostering a community of diverse clinicians and patients. We appreciate you, and I'll try to do my small part to keep you from complacency, though I doubt the risk is too great.
